Denny Revisited

New shop fronts, Denny Town Centre
New shop fronts, Denny Town Centre

This is a wee supplementary post to the one I published on Saturday

As I said at the end of that post, Denny town centre has been the subject of a major redevelopment over the past few years. The ugly blocks of flats that used to dominate the town centre are no more and in their place are new shop fronts, a new library, improved car parking and what Falkirk Council call a ‘town square’ with a number of artworks depicting the town’s history and heritage.

There’s a sculpture ‘treasure trail’ featuring works by Joseph Ingleby (above), smart new railings designed by David Annand, a stonework carving representing the River Carron by Blair Cunningham (below), and images carved into the stonework on the stairs leading from the main road (Glasgow Road) up to the car park.

Blair Cunningham’s stone representation of the River Carron (above) incorporates a short poem:

History and rivers flow with many stories still to unfold

This first phase of Denny Town Centre’s multi-million pound regeneration included new WiFi connectivity, which has led to Falkirk Council calling Denny “Scotland’s First Digital Town.” At the time of writing, there are improvements being made to the parking at Herbertshire Castle Park, as well as new interpretation boards and ‘street furniture’ alongside the River Carron as it runs near the Park.

It’s far too early to say what the longer-term benefits of all these changes will be, but the town centre is certainly a much more inviting place than it was a few years ago.
